Sorry I am so much trouble, but No, I didn’t set CPP or edit the arch file:

cohen at tomcat3:~/CP2K/cp2k/arch$ grep CPP local*

local.psmp~:CPP         =
local.sdbg:CPP         =
local.sopt:CPP         =

local_warn.psmp:CPP         =

I also checked env and CPP is not defined. Somehow CPP is getting defined anyway during the make.
I got the build to start working by adding:

undefine CPP

to the Makefile!
