You can specify a maximal time that your program can use in advance (Global 
section WALLTIME keyword). This can help to avoid having to kill the 
process.
I think 'kill -9 PID' will most likely not corrupt the files, and I think 
there should be multiple backup wavefuntions printed out.
So even if the last one is corrupted you might be able to restart your 
simulation from one step before.
