installation problem with OPENMPI and Gfortran 4.4.6

Just to add:

I am experiencing the same failure in compilation using gfortran-4.6.3.

It's not yet clear if I will be able to update the gcc on the machine I 
wish to use, so if there are any known workarounds or fixes for this issue 
I would be very grateful for a quick explanation.
