Axel,

please feel free to do all these changes in the RELEASE branch, as  
well as any
kind of improvement in the compilation stage.
We can think after about merging this setup to the main branch  
(especially if it will be sensibly
much more convenient than the user unfriendly way it is now ;-) ).
